Deborah Lewis

Formerly of Butler County, Debbie now lives on an active farm in Highland County with her husband and two Labrador retrievers.

Debbie has had a life-long attraction to glass. She got her first chance to learn stained glass after purchasing the new farm. The 1850’s Federal style house begged for the stained glass it was lacking. It wasn’t long before the house was filled with colorful windows. After working in stained glass for many years she wanted to try something new, yet still loved glass.

Debbie purchased a glass kiln five years ago and found her new love. The ability to manipulate glass with heat is a constant trial yet rewarding. The artist needs to be artist, chemist and researcher. Exploring this ancient art which made a comeback in the ‘70’s is exciting and fulfilling. The challenge of taking an idea to the studio, working with the glass and seeing the resulting piece come alive is very satisfying.

Glass is cut, ground, sanded and then fired to temperatures exceeding 1500 degrees. Pieces are placed in the kiln multiple times to achieve desired effects.   Most pieces are placed in clay molds for their final firing to get their shape.

All of her functional glass is food safe. Treat each piece as a work of art by using for light-duty only and hand washing. The glass is not microwave safe.
